My road to online business was hard and strenuous. I had to learn from my own mistakes so many times, that I decided to share my experience and knowledge with eCommerce starters. Hopefully, this short explanation of Shopify SEO problems and how to deal with them will be useful for the readers.

It is never enough to open an e-shop and patiently wait for the moment when hundreds of customers would flock to purchase products. The market is full of offers. Even if your idea is unique, even if it is a special startup, there will always be a competitor. Frankly speaking, there are innumerable competitors. And most of the time you will not be enjoying your greatest potential for sales.. Your work as a web store owner will consist of day by day trying to keep your head & shoulders above the other web stores. To prevent this you need to have a deep knowledge of the marketing sphere. The more web internet users know about your products the more likely they are to become customers.

There are 2 main ways to promote your web store:

  • Paid advertising;
  • Free search engine optimization.

In the first case, you have to pay for getting more visitors. The second one is both puzzling and  confusing for most retailers.

Search engine determines which content would be the most relevant to user’s request. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process that handles showing your web store in Google/ Yahoo/ Bingo/ etc search results.

Your web store should appear in search results as high as possible to be profitable. The higher your business ranks, the more likely a potential customer  is to click on it. It is called click-through-rates, and it is an excellent tool for increased traffic to your website.

Let’s summarize a few reasons why every online merchant should think about SEO improvement:

  • This is the best  strategy  to increase traffic;
  • You do not have to spend money on it;
  • SEO improvement is able to bring your web store to Google’s top and multiple revenue.

Shopify is one of the world’s major eCommerce platforms that caters for the needs of small and medium business perfectly. Shopify development team has taken care of all considerable eCommerce tasks. Fortunately they have made the process of selling online as hassle-free and seamless as possible. Nevertheless, no one and nothing is perfect. And Shopify has some problems with SEO.

1. Problem with Optimization of Title Tags

I have noticed that Shopify limits the number of characters to 70. Meanwhile, Google allows title width for 600 pixels. 70 characters do not fit 600 pixels: that is too much.

Check how your web store search result looks on Google to make sure the title is not cropped.

Tip to remember: the most optimized number of characters is around 60.

2. Problem with Alt Tags

Alt Tags are considered to be important elements of SEO improvement. They have a value for customers: when internet connection fails loading  a full image, Alt tags provide the content that needs to be seen.

Shopify store owners have to enter Alt tags on the image level. For example, when I faced this problem, I had to enter the Alt tags to each image manually, over and over.

Tip to remember: make your Alt tags special. Try to avoid entering keywords in the Alt attribute field.

3. Problem with sitemap

Search engines need the XML sitemap to index web pages and display  it to  users. Shopify automatically generates the XML sitemap once you add a new page to your web store. But in this case, there is the possibility that the problem with crawling would appear. The search engine would not index the page, and that may cause SEO to fail.

Tip to remember: use Google Webmaster to get rid of this problem.
